Young Mulk Raj Anand Man Mela's well-received tribute to the late Mulk Raj Anand at the Nehru Centre on Tuesday 7 December marks a key milestone in the company's eleven-year history.

Mulk's writings have long occupied a place of honour in Man Mela's repertoire and in the affections of its artistic director, Dominic Rai. It is fitting, therefore, that the company should pay homage to a great man whose work provided such a rich source of inspiration and whose passing, at the age of 98, calls for a reappraisal of his life and work, of his place in both the Indian and British cultural and political arenas and of his international legacy. 12 December 2005 marks the centenary of Mulk's birth and it is with great pleasure that we note Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's announcement of commemorative events in New Delhi on the eve of Mulk's birthday, with a centennial address to be given by Dr AS Dasan of Mysore University on the day itself and a series of exhibitions, symposia and other events.

Man Mela hopes to visit India at this time and looks forward to renewing and extending its academic and artistic contacts and to drawing inspiration from the centennial events in New Delhi. Our thanks are due to Mr Pavan Varma, director of the Nehru Centre, for his kind words, to his staff for their hospitality and to the audience for their warm reception. We look forward to many more such evenings in the coming years.
